The Post-Resurrection Ministry of Jesus Christ:
Conversations of Comfort, Instructions, and Power
After Jesus Christ's resurrection, He didn’t immediately ascend to heaven. Instead, He lingered on purpose to continue to fulfill His purpose. For 40 days, the risen Savior remained with His disciples and also provided comfort to John the Baptist's disciples. These visits and conversations offered reassurance and clarity and reminded them of their commission for what was to come. These sacred conversations were deeply intentional. They were moments of Comfort, Instructions, and Power, and they still speak to us today.
Comfort in a Time of Chaos
Jesus first appears to Mary Magdalene at the tomb in John 20. She is weeping, confused, and heartbroken. In a tender moment, Jesus says, “Touch me not; for I am not yet ascended to my Father…” (John 20:17, KJV). Although Jesus had not ascended to His Father, He still took time to Comfort Mary, who loved Jesus for giving her life, and gave her instructions to tell His disciples. Mary was the first one to share the news that Jesus had RISEN.
In Luke 24, on the road to Emmaus, Jesus walks with two of John's discouraged disciples. They don't recognize Him until He breaks bread. Reflecting later, they say, “Did not our heart burn within us, while He talked with us by the way…?” (Luke 24:32). Jesus reminds them of the fulfillment found in the Scriptures, and He reveals to them who He is.
Instructions for What’s Next
In John 21, Peter and the other disciples return to fishing. Jesus finds them fishing at the Sea of Galilee. They hadn't caught any fish, so Jesus announces Himself by performing a familiar miracle. He then invites them to "Come dine." As He sat and talked with Peter three times, Jesus asked, “Do you love me?” With each answer, He called, “Feed my sheep.” The Great Shepherd is restoring and commissioning His servant.
Later, in Matthew 28:19-20, Jesus gives the Great Commission: “Go ye therefore and teach all nations…” This was not just a mission for the moment a divine directive that echoes through generations. The instruction was clear: make disciples, teach truth, baptize, and go in His name.
Power from on High
In Acts 1, Jesus reminds them to wait: “But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you…” (Acts 1:8). This power would not be as they previously thought for political freedom, but it would be divine enablement to carry the Gospel and establish the Church.
For 10 days, they prayed, waited, and tarried in unity. Then came Pentecost, the fulfillment of the promise. The Holy Ghost poured out on them, giving them boldness, clarity, spiritual gifts, and supernatural ability to build the Church.
From Then to Now
The conversations Jesus had post-resurrection still speak. They show us how Jesus tends to our human frailty, gives clear direction, and empowers us to fulfill our purpose. As we reflect on this sacred season, may we find ourselves in the story:
Are we needing comfort? Jesus draws near.
Are we looking for clarity? He gives instructions.
Are we seeking strength to serve? He fills us with power.
May we, too, go forth with boldness—comforted, instructed, and empowered.
