Surrendering Our Secret Desires

Yesterday, my Bishop, Dr. Joseph White, taught a powerful message about the secret desires of “going back into the world.” He reminded us that these hidden longings to return to the old man, our former ways, thoughts, deeds, and desires, hinder us from moving forward in God.
As he taught, I began to imagine an image of the inner battle between the spirit and the soul. The Holy Spirit lives within our human spirit. The Spirit moves on our hearts and minds, helping us to yield to God. The inward man struggles, not yet fully ready to surrender, still pondering whether to move forward with the plans and thoughts of God. The battle is within and not visible to those around us. Our outward appearance can reflect a mind made up to walk with God, but secretly, we can have our doubts. Doubts about the thoughts and plans God has for our lives.
“For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end.” — Jeremiah 29:11
What lingers and lives in our souls? Our soul is packed with unhealed wounds, misplaced affections, worldly attachments, and unfulfilled desires. These become the very things that hold us back. It takes a deep purging to release these hidden desires and agenda, to let go of the life we imagined for ourselves, and embrace the one God has predestined for us.
To be transformed and renewed requires a greater love for God that surpasses every old longing, dream, or distraction that secretly still appeals to us. It requires us to surrender to God’s will and choose His will over our secret desires.
“Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.” — 1 John 2:15–17
We cannot chase the world and chase God’s thoughts at the same time. One will always pull us away from the other. To move forward in our divine destiny, we must surrender the idea that another life, one rooted in personal ambition, is better than the life God has already ordained for us.
When we fully submit our inward thoughts and self, the more the gifts and talents God has given us for our journey will become more prominent in our lives. There is no greater peace, purpose, or fulfillment than walking in the destiny that God Himself designed.
